Ingredients
- 1/3 cup warm water (80ml)
- 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (7g)
- 1/3 cup + 1/4 teaspoon granulated sugar (70g + 1g)
- 1 1/3 cups warmed milk (320ml)
- 5 tablespoons salted butter, softened (70g)
- 1 large egg
- 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
- 4 – 4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour (500-570g)
Instructions
- 1. Proof yeast: In a small bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and 1/4 teaspoon of sugar. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
- 2. Mix dough: In a large mixing bowl or electric stand mixer, combine the yeast mixture with warmed milk, remaining sugar, softened butter, egg, salt, and one cup of flour. Mix until combined.
- 3. Knead: Gradually add more flour until the dough pulls away from the sides of the bowl and feels slightly sticky; knead for about 5-6 minutes.
- 4. First rise: Grease a bowl and place the dough inside. Cover with a towel and let rise in a warm area until doubled in size (about 1 to 1½ hours).
- 5. Shape rolls: Divide dough in half; roll each portion into a rectangle about 1/4 inch thick. Cut into strips and roll each piece tightly.
- 6. Second rise: Place shaped rolls seam-side down on a greased baking sheet; cover with a towel and let rise until doubled again (about another hour).
- 7. Bake: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake for about 12-15 minutes until golden brown. Brush with melted butter when out of the oven.
